Beware of scammers on the ghats. Touts and self-styled “guides” or “priests” roam the Ganga ghats and temple lanes, offering VIP darshan, pujas, boat rides or “donations for cremation wood”. Never pay anyone in advance, and never pay for a service before you have actually received it. Book temple services only through the official trust.

How the city fits together

Varanasi stretches along the western bank of the Ganga, which here flows north. The ghats — stone steps down to the water — run for about 6.5 km from Assi in the south to Raj Ghat in the north. Behind them is the old city, a tangle of lanes (galis) where the Kashi Vishwanath temple stands, close to Dashashwamedh Ghat and the busy Godowlia crossing.

The newer city — the railway stations, the Cantonment, BHU and most big hotels — lies away from the river. Plan to spend most of your time between Assi and Manikarnika.

What to wear and carry

  • Modest, breathable clothes covering shoulders and knees; a shawl or stole.
  • Slip-on shoes or sandals — you will take them off often. Avoid leather for temple days.
  • Small cash in notes of ₹10–₹200, a cloth bag, hand sanitiser and tissues.
  • A water bottle; in summer, a cap and ORS sachets.
  • Full checklist: packing list.

Etiquette that matters

  • Remove footwear before temples and some ghat platforms.
  • Do not photograph cremations at Manikarnika or Harishchandra Ghat.
  • Ask before photographing sadhus and people — some will ask for money in return.
  • Use your right hand for giving and receiving offerings and prasad.

Common first-day mistakes

Do

  • Stay close to the ghats or Godowlia
  • Agree rickshaw and boat prices first
  • Book Mangala Aarti online in advance
  • Keep the first evening free for the Ganga Aarti

Avoid

  • Carrying phones and bags to the temple
  • Driving to Godowlia in the evening rush
  • Paying for “VIP darshan” passes from touts
  • Trying to see everything in one day

FAQ

Questions people ask

How many days do I need in Varanasi?
Two full days for the essentials; three to add Sarnath and the southern temples comfortably.
Is Varanasi suitable for elderly parents?
Yes, with planning: stay close to the temple, use Sugam darshan, and avoid long ghat walks in the heat. See our senior citizens guide.
Do I need a guide?
Not for darshan and aarti. A good local guide adds a lot on a heritage walk through the lanes and ghats.
