Where to stay

Varanasi has a long tradition of community dharamshalas built by Gujarati, Marwari and Maharashtrian trusts, many in the Godowlia–Dashashwamedh and Bansphatak area. They offer clean, simple rooms close to the temple, often with vegetarian bhojanalayas attached. For more comfort, hotels near Godowlia and the ghats are within walking distance of darshan.

Pure-veg and Jain-friendly food

Old Varanasi is largely vegetarian, and many restaurants near Godowlia and the ghats are pure-veg. For Jain food (no onion, garlic or root vegetables), ask clearly for “Jain” — most sit-down restaurants and the community bhojanalayas understand. Gujarati thalis are available in a few places near Godowlia.

Jain pilgrims will also want to visit the Jain temples at Bhelupur (birthplace of Parshvanath) and at Sarnath (Shreyansnath).

Maratha history you can still see

  • Kashi Vishwanath temple itself — rebuilt in 1780 by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore.
  • Ahilyabai Ghat, Scindia Ghat, Bhonsle Ghat and Panchganga Ghat (with stairs built by Peshwa-era patrons).
  • The Marathi-speaking pockets around Brahma Ghat and Durga Ghat, with their own priests and traditions.

அடிக்கடி கேட்கப்படும் கேள்விகள்

பக்தர்கள் கேட்கும் கேள்விகள்

Is a weekend trip from Mumbai possible?
Yes. Fly in Friday evening, do Mangala Aarti or early darshan on Saturday, the Ganga Aarti that evening, a boat ride on Sunday morning, and fly back Sunday evening.
Will I find Jain food?
Yes, ask for Jain preparation clearly. Many vegetarian restaurants and community bhojanalayas accommodate it.
